In 1157 Henry II ordered it slighted: deliberately damaged so it couldn't be defended, probably before the keep was even finished. Over the centuries much of its flint was carted off for houses around the town. What survives is the flint-and-mortar core of the keep's first two storeys, now Grade I listed and a scheduled monument. It was ordered down nearly 870 years ago.
