a single ash tree once stood at the very heart of the turf maze on Saffron Walden Common — until it was destroyed on the night of 5 November 1823, in the middle of Guy Fawkes celebrations. the tree went; the maze kept going. two hundred years later you still walk the same rings to a centre where the tree used to be. the front puts the bare ash tree dead-centre in fine winter-branch line, the maze rings looping out from its trunk as one continuous line, a few embers drifting off the branches for the night it was lost. caption stacked below: LOST 5 NOV 1823, THE MAZE KEPT GOING.
