the yew hedge maze at Bridge End Gardens was planted around 1870 and laid out on the design of the famous maze at Hampton Court Palace — a Saffron Walden copy of a London royal-palace original. at its centre stands a raised viewing platform that lets you look back out over the maze and the surrounding countryside. the front is the real plan drawn as one confident line, the looping Hampton Court pattern traced clean and even, the channels lightly cross-hatched so the clipped yew reads as hedge, a tiny figure on the platform at dead centre. captioned BRIDGE END GARDENS, C. 1870.
