on the gable of the Old Sun Inn in Saffron Walden, two giant figures stand moulded into the pargeting: the one on the left grips a long cross-hilted sword and a buckler, the one on the right holds a long nail-studded club, with a circular panel between them traditionally read as Tom Hickathrift's cartwheel. read straight, they're just the town's longest-serving bouncers. the front draws the pair flat and frontal in raised-plaster relief style with light hatching, the ringed cartwheel disc centred between their heads, captioned DOOR STAFF / SINCE 1676 like a club doorlist.
