HE PAID FOR IT. YOU DRINK FOR FREE.
George Stacey Gibson, born 1818, Quaker banker and Mayor nicknamed Mr Saffron Walden, personally funded the Market Square drinking fountain, the railway branch line to Audley End, the Corn Exchange (now the Library) and the mock-Tudor extension to the Town Hall. he paid for the fountain; the town drinks from it for free. the front draws that fountain straight — the ornate Victorian gothic, spire-topped pillar front-on in detailed architectural line, a thin trickle into the basin suggested by a few etched lines, a small bird on the rim for scale and dry charm. captioned MARKET SQUARE.
