a local lad built a lighthouse and said he wanted to be inside it during the worst storm imaginable. bold ask. the universe heard him.
henry winstanley was baptised in saffron walden in 1644 and built the first eddystone lighthouse, so pleased with it that he wished to be inside during "the greatest storm there ever was." in november 1703 the great storm swept the lighthouse, and winstanley, clean off the rocks. this one renders his proudest work as an antique copperplate engraving caught at the exact moment it goes, the dated ribbon doing the work the punchline doesn't need to. confidence is a hometown trait.
