in medieval Europe 500g of saffron cost the same as a horse — and producing one kilogram took roughly 200,000 flowers and 400-plus hours of labour. the front is that fact as a deadpan apothecary balance: a tiny pinch of saffron threads on one pan, a whole medieval dray horse on the other, the beam hanging dead level. the horse is a fine wood-engraving line drawing, all tone from hatching, no solid fills; the only colour is the pinch of saffron. 500g = ONE HORSE reads like a dry old ledger note under the scale.
