THE WALL WAS A HOLE. the town that walled itself in did it with a trench.

Walden's medieval defence wasn't a wall — it was a hole. the earthwork shows up in 1304 land records as the magnum fossatum (great ditch), later nicknamed the Repell, Pell, Bestle, Paigle or Battle Ditches. the Battle Ditches measured about 20 feet wide lip to lip and 7-9 feet deep, part of a rectangular town circuit that originally ran roughly two miles around medieval Walden. the whole front is the surveyor's section-drawing of that ditch — a clean V-profile cut through hatched chalk and soil, dimension lines marking 20 FT across the lip and 7-9 FT down the depth, a dashed original-ground line across the top. deadpan, like a real excavation report.
