three red threads per flower, 150 flowers to scrape together a single gram, every one picked by hand. this town used to do that on purpose, and apparently still wants the credit.
it's the saffron crocus, crocus sativus — the same flower walled into the town arms — drawn dead straight as an antique museum botanical plate, the kind behind glass. the three stigma threads (the actual saffron) are the hero, arcing red out of the throat. back in his day William Harrison (1534-93) wrote that Walden saffron "surmounteth all the rest," and the last local harvests gave up around the 1780s, so this is the closest you'll get to bringing it back. the caption does the bragging so you don't have to: 150 flowers to the gram, all picked by hand, surmounteth all the rest.
