in 1763 Capability Brown — the most celebrated landscape gardener in England — was contracted to widen the River Cam at Audley End into a lake-like linear lake for £660, finished within 13 months by May 1764. then he and Sir John Griffin fell out, Griffin complaining of a wrong bend to the River, & contrary to his own Plan. the front is that complaint scribbled onto his own survey: a winding river drawn as one confident plan-view line, one bend circled and marked with a hand-drawn X, a dotted as-planned line peeling off the other way, a small compass rose in the corner.
